I Want My WRC!

Rally Cars

There is something missing from our country in a bad way - Rally Racing.  Ever since television networks here in America stopped covering WRC (World Rally Championships) I have gone into a state of withdrawal.  Not being able to keep up on the most demanding and exhilarating form of motor sports gave me the shakes like a raging alcoholic gone dry.

For those of you who have never seen this amazing display of driving skill, you should definitely look up some WRC videos and prepare to be blown away.  In most other parts of the world, rally racing is held in such high regards as Formula 1, but to put it bluntly, the rest of the world lives for rally like the South lives for Nascar.

Let's go back to the good old days when WRC was covered on American TV networks.
Even though manufacturers like Ford, Mitsubishi, and Subaru only sold their street legal rally machines overseas (for homologation purposes), the neglected rally fans stateside still had some media coverage to enjoy.  The thought of going to a rally in person or maybe even owning a Lancer Evolution or Impreza WRX gave rally fans goose bumps.

Nowadays, it seems like every other car you see on the roads or featured in magazines is a WRX or EVO.  Subaru and Mitsubishi finally decided to wise up and give us Americans a chance to own these killer machines that the rest of the world has been enjoying all these years.  With the explosion of these cars (and all the others in its class following suit) you would think that there would be a rising interest in rally racing right?  Guess again.

Although the American rally scene has grown recently with the help of Travis Pastrana and the Rally America series along with SRT USA's push, it's still nowhere near other parts of the world.  The popularity of the WRX/STi stateside has introduced a new demographic to rally racing (enter the X Games), but media coverage is still almost non-existent.  I'm just glad we were lucky enough to watch the legendary Colin Mcrae in action at the X Games.

So come on America.  Who wants to watch guys with 2 first names drive in circles for a couple hours?  I would much rather watch cars traveling sideways at speeds in excess of 80mph on dirt/gravel/snow (or flying through the air) with nothing keeping them from plummeting off a cliff other than the drivers amazing skill and the co-driver's navigation. Who's with me ? !
